Provenance: presumable Wildenstein Gallery, New York (1973). Literature: A. Morassi, Guardi, Venice 1973, I, p. 452, no. 763 (probably the painting mentioned under “version”). Guardi repeatedly interpreted the small campo depicted in the present painting. A preliminary drawing recently sold at Christie’s that can be associated with this group of works bears stronger resemblances to the composition of our picture, particularly it terms of the distribution of the figural staffage, than to the painting at the Musée Jacquemart-André, which can undoubtedly be regarded as the prototype (comp. A. Morassi, op. cit., 1973, I, p. 452, no. 763, II, fig. 697). A further version once figured in the New York Striebel Gallery (comp. A. Morassi, op. cit., 1973, I, p. 452, no. 764, II, fig. 700). For the Paris version, Morassi lists several preliminary drawings and watercolours. Our painting seems to be identical to the version once in the Wildenstein Collection.
