Rupert Feuchtmüller writes about Waldmüller’s original painting: “Here Waldmüller’s goal was to stimulate the viewer’s sympathy, and he does so with extreme intensity. The boy, standing in the snow with thin shoes, turns to the viewer, with a begging gesture. Although he is in the sun, his rugged coat flutters full of holes in the wind. His mother holds his little sister - who also looks at the viewer - wrapped tightly in her shawl, leaning against the stone balustrade that serves as a shelter. This family obviously once lived in better conditions. But what is the aim of this delicate, good-looking boy’s appeal in the comfortable rooms of an art exhibition or of a Biedermeier home? This sympathy in connection with the aesthetic perception of a picture addresses sentimental emotions without aiming to provoke the viewer.”
