Bertel Thorvaldsen, (Copenhagen 1768–1844 Copenhagen) Danish sculptor, preeminent neoclassical Scandinavian sculptor; copies of class. Greek sculpture guided by the ideas of Winckelmann. Between 1796–1838, Thorvaldsen resided and worked in Rome. The Thorvaldsen-Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, is dedicated exclusively to his work and houses the original figure of a shepherd boy.
