"The Tailor on the Billy Goat" - An epergne, - Starožitnosti

porcelain, polychromed and gilt, tailor and billy goat wearing pince-nez, the tailor with tricorn with gilt trim and peruke with black bow, the blue-red strap with brooch, bearing the polychrome painted scissors, thread, flanked by hanging ball of pink and green wool, wearing a white ruffled shirt, yellow vest, and lapels with polychrome "indianische" blossoms, the white jacket with elaborate gilt decoration, gilt borders, buttons, and ribbons, under the jacket a measuring stick, in the background a bag with sewing kit, holding black reins in the left hand, the billy goat carrying a black leather strap with pin cushion, the facing side with two wine bottles, flat iron, and scissors between the horns, height: 44,5 cm, length 42 cm, the right rein lost, the right hoof slight retouched; Meissen, underglaze blue crossed swords ca. 1980, model no. 76015, former no. 149, model by Johann Joachim Kändler 1737 (Ru)

According to legend, this figure represents August III. court tailor, who one day appealed to his sovereign: "to allow him to appear at the courtly dinner table in place of a regular fee. Rather than being brusquely refused, he was advised to return to the Palace in a few weeks' time. The tailor perceived the rosy dawn of unprecedented honour. Meanwhile the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was commissioned to produce the above figural group. On the appointed day of his introduction to the court table, he was lead from room to room, heightening his anticipation until it became nearly unbearable. His surprise and disappointment was all the greater when he arrived at the festively decorated table only to come face to face with his image in porcelain"
