Robert Marc *

(Auxerre, France 1943- 1993)
9722, c. 1975, signed Robert Marc, oil on canvas, 81 x 54 cm

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK

Robert Marc’s rich and complex works, often depicting geometrically constructed abstract forms, which intertwine with each other and are punctuated by fragments of typography, can easily be associated with the Cubist tradition. However, the artist was most heavily influenced by the Russian Avant-Garde and the work of artist’s such as Rodchenko and Malevich. Working in Paris and in his studio in the French countryside, Marc exhibited both in France and internationally, holding shows in New York and Tokyo and thus enjoying a strong international following.
The subject matter and style of the present painting are typical of the later oeuvre of Robert Marc – whilst his earlier works tended to be darker and more saturated, the later works took on a lighter and more colourful character and were often filled with drawings and typography. Abstract forms of various shapes, sizes and colours harmoniously sit with one another in the composition of the present canvas and simultaneously cover and reveal fragments of wording so that the viewer is unable to easily decipher what is being depicted, and is instead compelled to see the world through the fractured lens of the artist.
