Rare Olmec mortar, Mexico ca.1000-600 BC.
27 cm long. This unique mortar, carved in Rhyolite (Quartzite), could represent an outstretched acrobat, but most likely depicts a shamanic deity in trance. The mortar was probably used for fine grinding of medicinal or hallucinogenic material and the personal property of an important priest. Damage and wear conformant to age and use.
