A Mayan padlock stone or 'Manopla'. Classic Period, ca. A. D. 450-650.

A Mayan padlock stone or 'Manopla'. Classic Period, ca. A. D. 450-650. - Tribal Art

White stone with traces of red cinnabar overall. 22 cm diam. Manoplas have been found throughout central and South America and are important accoutrements to the Mesoamerican Ball Game. These abstract, loop-handled stones were first used by the Olmec. They are depicted in the early ball court panel sculpture. The manopla is an essential part of the sacred ballgame, like the stone yokes and the hachas. Presumably these heavy stones were gripped from above in two hands and used as a kind of bat to propulse the ball made of heavy natural rubber. The red cinnabar coating of this example attests to a ritual or votive use. This elegant example with graphic form is almost identical in shape to one illustrated by Covarrubias in 1966.
