We are grateful to Peter Sutton, who confirmed the present painting to be an autograph work by Pieter de Grebber on the basis of a photograph. The present picture will be included in his forthcoming monograph on the artist.
Pieter de Grebber, trained under Hendrick Goltzius and was influenced by the followers of Rembrandt. He specialised in biblical scenes populated by large-sized figures and depictions of shepherds and shepherdesses. One of his pupils was Nicolaes Berchem.
