Johann Adam Klein was taught drawing as a child by Georg Christoph von Bemmel and studied under Gustav Philipp Zwinger in the city school of drawing. He engraved in the style of 17th century Dutch etchings under the copperplate engraver Ambrosius Gabler. His remarkable talent in the representation of animals prompted his teacher to send him to sketch at cattle markets. Numerous journeys to Austria, Hungary and Germany followed. His virtuosity in rendering individual details is shown clearly in his depictions of landscapes and animals.
