Basil the Great is regarded as one of the most important figures in early Christianity. Together with Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom, he is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs. Basil was an active ascetic, bishop and Doctor of the Church. Leading a modest life, he was honoured even during his own lifetime.
