Dr. Ulrike von Hase-Schmundt, Munich (20 July 2012) available.
The landscape and officer riding by with his men on the left in the middle distance are the work of Eugen Adams, the third son of Albrecht Adams.
We are grateful to Mag. Friedrich Mayer for his assistance in cataloguing this work.
Mag. Mayer has been able to verify that Theodor von Klein, who is depicted in this work, held the Austrian military rank of Lieutenant in 1838, of Second Cavalry Captain in 1844, First Cavalry Captain in 1848 and Major in 1850. In 1851 he was awarded the Military Order of Merit with the pension of a Lieutenant Colonel. According to Mayer, "the date in which the painting was executed can be narrowed to the years from 1838 to 1848 as the officer is shown in a uniform which accords with the 1837 dress code (officer's helmet model 1836, pantaloons worn over half-length boots) instead of the white riding breeches and high boots formerly worn. The painting cannot have been executed any later, for in the military scheme of 1850 which  lists the ranks of 1849, von Klein already appears with the rank of Major, and as such would have had to have worn the staff officer's braiding in silver, the colour of the regiment's buttons, on the cuffs…"

The Dragoon Regiment no.3, owned by the later Emperor Francis Joseph since 1843, was stationed in Prossnitz near Olmütz in Moravia from 1838 to 1847. The work here was executed in Olmütz. According to Mrs von Hase-Schmundt, "the dating and execution of the portrait can be determined with some precision, thanks to Albrecht Adams' letters. Invited by Emperor Ferdinand I, in April 1848 he travelled from Munich to Olmütz. His sketches allow us to assume that this was in order to paint the Emperor on horseback. After the March 1848 uprisings in Vienna the Imperial Family had withdrawn to the Moravian city, residing in the Archbishop's palace. Adams reports on the friendly reception given to him by the Imperial Family. He is in Olmütz again in March 1849 with a second commission to paint the young Emperor Francis Joseph I on horseback. His portrait of Theodor von Klein, who is stationed in nearby Prossnitz, dates to these weeks in Olmütz. Perhaps the portrait is intended for his father Friedrich von Klein in Mecklenburg who was widowed in March 1848…".

Theodor von Klein was a member of a Mecklenburg family enobled in 1708. In 1835 he married Antonie Leopoldine Boleslavsky, Edle von Ritterstein (1809–1892). Theodor von Klein retired in 1851 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
