Emil Gottlieb Schuback
(Hamburg 1820–1902 Düsseldorf) An Unexpected Visit, signed and inscribed E. Schuback, Düsseldorf, oil on canvas, 88 x 108 cm, framed, (Rei)
Emil Gottlieb Schuback: Schuback received his first lessons in painting from G. Hardorff the Elder in Hamburg. From 1836 onwards he studied with P. Cornelius and H. Hess in Munich. From 1843 to 1844 the artist was resident in Rome where he painted copies of works by Raffael and others. Schuback lived in Hamburg again from 1848 onwards. After continuing his education from 1855 to 1856 as a pupil of R. Jordan in Düsseldorf, Schuback finally settled in Düsseldorf where he dedicated himself to compositions of figures taken from history and the present, as well as portrait painting. He exhibited his often humorous and sometimes cautionary genre scenes, with motifs often entertaining episodes from the lives of children, in Berlin, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, Cologne and Munich, amongst others. A posthumous exhibition of the artist’s works was held in Düsseldorf’s Kunsthalle in 1902.
