Gaspard Dughet, called Poussin

(Rome 1615–1675) A view of Tivoli with the temple of Sibilla Tiburtina and the large waterfall in the foreground, oil on canvas, 37 x 60 cm, framed,

pendant to the following lot. We are grateful to Dr. Hermann Jedding, Hamburg, for identifying this pair of paintings as autograph works by Dughet (certificate of February 2010). As the most important follower of Claude Lorrain, Dughet was trained in Poussin's workshop, also focusing on heroic landscapes as he had done. As is the case with the present pair of paintings, the first of which is a view of Tivoli, the second probably depicting Castel Gandolfo, his aim in his paintings was the well-composed landscape. Characteristic of his work is the quick, freely painted foliage and the powerful masses of towering clouds. The brown tones of the coloration are also typical of Dughet's style. The large number of attributed works and the fact that they barely change over the course of the years means that it is difficult to date the paintings. The figural groups in Dughet's paintings are generally the work of his artist colleagues also active in Rome.
