Carl Wilhelm Hübner: The artist was a pupil of Johann Eduard Wolff in Königsberg before moving on to study at the Düsseldorf Academy under W. Schadow and K. Sohn. He started by painting scenes of folklife but quickly moved to depicting social ills. After 1848 his paintings became milder once more. He continued to produce variations on the old themes of human need and misery with the typically sentimental touch of the Düsseldorf School of painting, but from this period onwards his serious themes also took on a humorous note (Compare Thieme-Becker, Künstlerlexikon, Leipzig 1925, Vol. XVIII, p. 45). This is probably the painting Gedrückte Stimmung (“Low Spirits”) as illustrated in Friedrich Boetticher’s Malerwerke des 19. Jhdts, Vol I, 2, painting number 67.
