South Persia (Iran), c. 185 x 136 cm, about 1880, this luxurious niche silk carpet displays an Indian influence in its pattern featuring a heron and a "Chinese" dragon’s head as the legendary symbols of good and evil; the border with blossoms, dove pairs and stags in the spandrels imitates the outline of a picture frame; an identical piece adorns the cover of Calatchi’s book; excellent condition with full silk pile and smooth feel, both ends secured with a linen band on the back, signature on the upper front.
