Beijing Palace Carpet Silk,

Beijing Palace Carpet Silk, - Orientální koberce, textilie a tapiserie

Northeast China, c. 244 x 160 cm, about 1800; inscription: Hall of Preserving Harmony, large, old palace carpet made of silk with embedded metal threads; only in the last few decades has this group gained the attention it deserves in the international carpet sector, and signed carpets in particular are much sought-after collectibles today; the present object’s special knotting, pattern design with peonies and lotus flowers, its central medallion, as well as its rare colour spectrum with rose-red, suggest that it must be a very early specimen; the carpet was subjected to heavy use and is now preserved in a mostly very low and partially bare pile condition and with heavily worn metal threads, a small hole and a vertical tear to the lower left side are backed with linen fabric, both original ends have survived and have been secured, the side edges have been repaired in places, both carpet edges on the right-hand side are damaged.
