Tapestry,

Brussels (Netherlands), c. 477 x 306 cm, second quarter of the 18th century, unidentified scene with an elegant music-making and drinking party in a park landscape, fine silk and wool weaving. As a result of increased demand for tapestries in European interiors, workshops experienced an unprecedented boom throughout the 18th century. The vast production followed primarily the cartoon designs by Oudry and Boucher, which strove to achieve exact reproductions and a quality rivalling with painting. The dominant fashion featured series with complex groups of figures and pastel colours in Rococo style. The present carpet depicts the popular subject of carefree merrymaking in nature. The older large borders have been omitted, thus elevating the pictorial subject to the exclusive focus of the work. This piece is complete and in a good state of preservation, with minor open areas and a few repairs, edge damage all around, backed with linen, with rings for mounting at the upper end on the back.
