Venetian School, 18th Century (2) - Obrazy starých mistrů

Military encampment; and
Cavaliers arriving in a military encampment,
oil on canvas, each 96 x 148 cm, framed, a pair (2)

This pair of paintings represent two scenes of military encampment. In the first, the soldiers are stationed at the foot of a hill where the siege of a fortress is underway. In the distance we see the soldier’s cannons and their tents. In the other painting, a group of militia men accompanied by two trumpeting cavaliers on the left, reach an encampment where a man seated at a desk beneath a tent counts money.

The many figures that animate these two paintings are vivaciously represented by the brush of the anonymous painter who lingers over the description of details of dress, and the many varied stances of the figures. Furthermore, in the first painting, the military setting also leaves space for the representation of episodes from the everyday-life of common-folk: indeed, on the left there is a group of card players and near them, two women are shown stealing from a sleeping man.

These two works belong in the ambit of the eighteenth-century North Italian battle-scene painters, and most especially those of Venice, whose works reveal north European influences. A painter who became particularly distinguished in this genre was the Venetian Antonio Stom.
