green-blue glazed, round form on original iron frame, smooth base, structured central segment with 3 panels, the facing side with Pallas Athena with Roman helmet and plume, her right hand resting on her shield, in her left hand a lance, at her feet her symbolic animal, the owl, in the left panel a striding boy, bringing her a laurel wreath, in the right panel a striding girl, bringing her oil vessels, finial with moulded arches and rosettes, tiered cornice, smooth base, section with rosettes, palmettes and thyrsos rods and bulging edge, flat domed top with lancet-shaped leaves and vase, height incl. frame 226 cm, diameter 65 cm, cornice diameter 75 cm, restored, suitable for electric heating, dome and vase supplemented, formerly back-loaded, but connecting tiles missing, Austria c. 1810-1830 (Ru)
In Greek Mythology, Pallas Athena was Zeus’ favourite daughter. She promoted peace and protected the arts and sciences, as a virgin warrior she favoured disciplined combat. She was the patron goddess of the city of Athens, which was named after her; her animal symbol is the owl, her plant the olive tree.
