Three months after the cabriolet he coupé finally arrived on the market in October 1956. Customers had already been waiting for over a year for a new two-door Ponton. On the other hand, with only 85 of its predecessor coupés built the folks in Stuttgart, probably wondered who these customers actually were.

To save the Ponton coupé from this fate, the price was lowered to level of the cabriolets. Despite this, in three years only 1,251 customers declined the open-top version in favor of the closed coupés. Their quantity never got came close to the number of cabriolets.

Yet the coupé was a captivatingly stunning and elegant automobile. With its wraparound windshield in the back, enclosed by the wide B-pillar which seemingly lay against the direction of travel, it was a bold design which gave the car the right hint of a sporty look.

A new era finally began in 1958, when fuel-injected engines became attainable outside the premier class. They were introduced in the large Ponton line until the new models eventually showed off their (tail)fins the following year. The cabriolet and coupé kept their position until the end of 1960, when their successors for the following spring came into view.

Their mechanical two-stamp fuel injection had come from the 300 Sc luxury liner. Its performance increased to a whole 115 hp with noticeably lower consumption. A steeper camshaft provided a further five horsepower for the final year. The fuel injected engine increased the price by almost 2,000 Mark and only 830 buyers were willing to do this with the coupé. Some of them also chose the steel sliding roof from Webasto or Golde which further increased the price considerably.

Ponton coupés fitted like this were among the rarest models built by Mercedes-Benz. Refined as the were, they were the choice of connoisseurs at their time and remain so today.

This 220 SE Coupé is the car that has been owned by Wiesenthal the longest: in fact, it has been there ever since the very beginning. It was regsitered with the number plate S300 to Mercedes-Benz in Salzburg on 2 January 1959, back when Günther Wiesenthal was still head of the „Zentralbüro“. After all, the family’s country estate was not far from there. When the car was followed by a coupé from a successor series, so it was registered in Vienna in 1961 and thereafter had the well-known number plate W-119, that lives on in the collection to this very day. The obligatory notebook is testament to its maintenance and servicing, while a driver’s log reveals its original mileage. There were a few issues recorded with the fuel supply, therefore the injection system was rebuilt in 2001.

As if a Ponton coupé with a fuel-injected engine was not rare enough, the sun-roof made it even more exclusive in every respect. If that is still not sufficient, have a look through the option lists for colour code 427. This special order paint job in beige metallic may well be unique. This was supplemented by cream-coloured leather, a Becker Mexico radio, a windscreen wiper system, a second fan, white wall tyres, rear seats with a side section and a tyre-pressure tester in German language.

Certainly unique is the coupé’s condition today – in the best sense of the word. It was repainted a while back, but is otherwise unrestored. The stunning patina on its interior is of particularly captivating beauty, almost like a pieace of art. There is no more charming way to show off 60 years of automobile life. In the present day, money simply cannot buy originality and history. Add rarity to this equation and what you get is this stunning car!
