Emil Jakob Schindler first travelled to Holland in 1875, where he completed a series of images depicting Amsterdam and Dutch landscapes. The idea behind this journey was doubtless triggered by his interest in the atmospherically dense works of the great Dutch landscape painters such as Jacob van Ruisdael.
Schindler’s open style of painting enabled him to skilfully capture the weathered surface of the historic building in Amsterdam’s Jodenbuurt. The bright yellow light illuminating the gables of the houses and the white clothing worn by passers-by stands in contrast to the brown shades of the narrow alley.
