Giuseppe Cesari, called Cavalier d’Arpino and Bernardino Cesari

Giuseppe Cesari, called Cavalier d’Arpino and Bernardino Cesari - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Arpino 1568–1640 Rome)
(Arpino 1571–1622 Rome)
The Capture of Christ,
oil on panel, 89.4 x 62.3 cm, unframed

Provenance:
possibly Villa Miollis al Quirinale, Rome, 1814 (?);
Private European collection

Literature:
possibly A. Visconti, Indicazione delle sculture e della galleria de’ quadri esistenti nella Villa Miollis al Quirinale, Roma 1814, p. 75, no. 242;
possibly C. Benocci, Villa Aldobrandini a Roma, Roma 1992, p. 227,
no. 611;
possibly H. Röttgen, Il Cavalier Giuseppe Cesari D’Arpino, Roma 2002,
p. 309

We are grateful to Herwarth Röttgen for confirming the attribution of the present painting. He dates this work to 1596-1597.

There are several versions of the present composition including one on copper by Giuseppe Cesari in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (79 x 58 cm, inv. no. 356). Another version is in the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel, which may also have been executed together with his brother Bernardino (inv. 1749, no. 600).
A version in the Fagiolo dell’Arco collection, Rome is datable to 1610–1620, while another later studio replica is in the Accademia di San Luca, Rome (inv. no. 158). Among other versions Röttgen cites one once in the Villa Aldobrandini, Rome (see F. A. and A. Visconti, Indicazione delle sculture e della galleria di quadri esistenti nella Villa Miollis al Quirinale, Rome 1814, p. 75, no. 242: ‘Gesù arrestato dalli Giudei nell’orto del Cav. d’Arpino’ [‘Jesus captured by the Jews in the Garden by Cav. d’Arpino’]).

The present composition’s palette is dominated by the warm light of the torches contrasted with the cool light of the moon, which illuminates and emphasises the events unfolding in the nocturne scene, drawn from the Gospel according to Mark (14: 46-56). The bright colour of the robes of Christ and Peter emerge from the scene vividly. Above all, the striking qualities of this painting are its dynamic movement and the distribution of chiaroscuro. The composition appears to fall to the left while it is animated by movement in all directions.
A dramatic motif is isolated at the centre of the composition.

Bellori, the biographer, acknowledged the skill of the Cavalier d’Arpino in a note in his copy of Baglione’s Vite; commenting about the Galleria Borghese painting on copper he said: ‘la più bell’ opera che facesse il Cavaliere’ [‘the finest work made by the Cavaliere’]. This work certainly influenced Caravaggio, in particular his Martyrdom of Saint Matthew for the Contarelli chapel in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome.

Giuseppe Cesari was the most celebrated official painter in Rome during the pontificate of Clement VIII Aldobrandini (1592–1605). He received the knighthood of Christ in 1600 and was then called Cavalier d’Arpino. Bernardo was his younger brother and studio partner; at the time when this painting was executed the Cesari brothers were living in the palazzo of Giulio Antonio Santori, Cardinal of San Severina.
