Gérard van Spaendonck developed his style in Antwerp before moving to Paris in 1770. Descending from the flower painting tradition of Jan van Huysum and his contemporaries, he would have a successful career. Appointed miniature painter to the king in 1774 and member of the Academy in 1781, he became a conseiller in 1788 and then exhibited regularly at the Salon until his death. He also produced models for porcelain designs to be manufactured in Sèvres.
