An important “Organic Chair” mod. no. A3501, designed by Eero Saarinen & Charles Eames*,
USA in 1940, an early model (from the early 1950s), oak, laminated and moulded wooden seat shell, upholstered, light-coloured textile covering, aluminium connections between the legs and the seat shell, rigid plastic feet, height c. 86 cm, width c. 73.5 cm, depth c. 65.5 cm, height of seat c. 44 cm. Designed for the competition “Organic Design in Home Furnishing” launched by the Department of Industrial Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on 1 October 1940. The competition was initiated by Elliot Noyes, the first curator of this newly installed department. The goal was to motivate architects and companies to develop and market modern furniture for a modern lifestyle.
