silver, gilt, some enamelling, pearls, emeralds, rubies, lapis lazuli, socle in the form of the city walls of Jerusalem, sculpted angel, sculpted resurrection scene, the centre with a glazed scene depicting Christ Pantocrator, flanked by a scene of the 12 Apostle, the finial with a scene depicting God the Father, verso with two hinged lids with moulded scene depicting St George and St Christopherus, glazed scene of Christ healing the mother-in-law of Simon Petrus, height: 33,5 cm, gross weight: 1780 g, maker's mark LW = Leopold Witzmann, Vienna Diana hallmark 1872-1922, in original leather covered sleeve, (Lu)

An excellent Historism Period piece from Vienna of precious workmanship. Also: Typed letter by Countess Eltz describing the provenance. According to the letter, the altar was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I. for his brother Archduke Carl Ludwig. When the latter subsequently died after a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, the Emperor gifted the altar to Katharina von Schratt.
