...in Paris, Staudacher was heavily influenced by the furore-generating George Mathieu, who was also known to paint with his pistol. Mathieu had studied mathematics, an initially little-known fact; the classical proportions of geometry often underlie his pictures.

Staudacher’s intuitive gestural painting is certainly not grounded in mathematically calculated movements. Thus space was not primary for him in the way it was for Mathieu, but rather time, which admittedly cannot do without space, whether as background or as a foil. In the catalogue to an exhibition in the “Galerie le Soleil dans la Tête,” located in rue Vaugirard, which was often depicted in films of this era, Henri Chopin described Staudacher as one of those painters who seek “la sensation des couleurs, des traits, des signes” in their work and beyond, in order to capture and control the fleeting moment: “Il brûle en ses sauts et danse ... en plein ciel.” Chopin is here describing Staudacher’s situation: alone and without assurances. Jean Jacques Lêvèque spoke of Staudacher’s “highly strung sensitivity” and as early as 1960 (!) of a “disintegration, not just of shapes but also of representations...”
