A classic Baule 'Mblo' portrait mask, late 19th century.
Congo, wood, 30 cm.
Like the other Mblo mask from the Monzino collection, published in the 'Baule' by Susan Vogel, this fine portrait mask is worn during Mblo performances . These are a combination complex of dances culminating in tributes to the community's most distinguished members. Each mask can be identified by the facial features and scarification. The wide forehead and downcast eyes are important features associated with intellect and respect in Baule aesthetics.
