A thangka depicting the Indian scholar Atisha Dipamkara, Tibet, Amdo, 19th cent. - Umění a starožitnosti

The unusually large format of this work indicates that this is a hanging scroll from a temple at the monastery in Amdo. To the centre, the Indian scholar, Atisha Dipamkara Srijnana (980-1054) is depicted, who was responsible for the second dissemination of Buddhism in Tibet. He is shown with the traditional pointed red hat of the scholar and wearing a monk’s red habit. To his left is a vessel for evaporating water, and to his right, a gilt stupa. He is flanked by White and Green Taras, and above him are the Buddhas Shakyamuni and Amitabha. Depicted to the left within the lower image is Dromtönpa, and, to the lower right with a yellow hat, Khedrub Je Geleg Palsang, inscriptions identifying them appear beneath them. Both are shown making a gesture of teaching and with holy texts in their laps. The painting is very skilfully executed and has great expressive power.
