A “Lotus Leaf” sculpture, Based Upon

A “Lotus Leaf” sculpture, Based Upon - Design

designed and manufactured by Based Upon in 2014, Great Britain, sculptural bronze construction in the shape of a lotus leaf. The irregularly shaped upper surface and its colouring contrast with the bowl-shaped underside, yet at the same time they form a homogeneous unit, creating a dialogue between this free-standing object and its surroundings. Signed. Dimensions: height c. 35 cm, length c. 118 cm, depth c. 60 cm, weight c. 90 kg. (MHA)

The present object was made as a prototype for a larger commissioned work which was made up of 5 lotus leaves. Based Upon originally intended for this single leaf to form part of the final work but they ended up making the work separately and keeping this single leaf.

The present object was shown as single leaf at Masterpiece 2015.

“Lotus Leaf” grows from Based Upon’s studies into the division of whole forms from which began with “The Fragmented Crack”: A rectangular prism was re-imagined, ruptured and formed into three fissured parts, revealing a golden bronze core. “Lotus Leaf” extends this re-imagining, exploring the segmentation of a spherical form.

Sculpted in paper, manipulated by hand, “Lotus Leaf” was finally realised in cast bronze. The five crescent-shaped elements of the collection recall an open lotus flower, expanding from the original sphere, unfolding petals to the sun.
In sunlight, the lotus flower escapes the darkness which encloses it overnight.

In this spirit, “Lotus Leaf”, speaks of wholeness and separation, of enlightenment and awakening.
Guided by twin brothers Ian and Richard Abell, the artist collective Based Upon travels the world to gather narratives, memories, textures, and histories. In the London studio, these grow into sculptural works which look at notions of wholeness and separation, the natural and the manmade. All of these works tell stories: of Based Upon’s own experiences or those of its clients. Each Based Upon work carries the intention of its maker; every piece resonating with the personal or physical landscapes from which it was conceived. With an intuitive eye for depth, beauty and meaning, Based Upon are artists, creators and adventurers. They find their centre on the edges of life by creating poetic sculptural work that reminds us to connect with the essence of life.
