The motif displayed in the present lot by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach had already been exhibited in Munich in 1891 as part of the cycle “Paradise Regained”. In this cycle, however, the girl was not depicted with snakes, as in this image, but with a dragonfly on the back of her hand, instead. From 1896 onwards, Diefenbach used the snake to place the subject in a new context and numerous versions of this were created until 1913, according to Diefenbach’s diary entries. These seem to have been primarily produced during his stay in Egypt.
