Workshop of Pieter Brueghel II

Workshop of Pieter Brueghel II - Obrazy starých mistrů II

(Brussels 1564–1638 Antwerp)
The Alchemist,
oil on wood, diameter 20.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Deceased Estate, USA, until first half of 2019

The present composition is part of a series of Flemish proverbs that was produced by Pieter Brueghel II and his workshop. The inscription on the frame reads as follows: ‘Die volcken wilt ryck syn en hem met valsheyt besmetten...die moet syn siele inden theurfhoeck setten’. This 17th century proverb is no longer a part of common speech in Dutch and translates literally as [‘People (who) want to be rich and soil him(self) with falseness, must put their soul in the peat-corner’]. Although there is no modern-day English exact equivalent to this, the 16th Century writer William Tindale introduced the expression of ‘filthy lucre’ to mean wealth accrued by dishonorable means, nowadays expressed as having become ‘filthy rich’, the proverb could also be compared with another expression, ‘to have blackened one’s soul’.
