the second: oil on panel, 22.4 x 15 cm, framed
Luuk Pijl confirmed the attribution of the present paintings to Marten Ryckaert. A written certificate (in photocopy) is available.
Pijl wrote: ‘Although none of the present panels is signed, there can be no doubt that they are executed by Ryckaert. The way the foliage is rendered and the typically yellow-green palette are highly characteristic of this master. Also, the way the figures are painted with just a few brushstrokes is very typical. The unusual format of the present two related paintings is explained by the fact that the small paintings once formed part of a cabinet. Marten Ryckaert frequently decorated Antwerp cabinets.’
