Silk Yarkand or Kansu Fragment,
East Turkestan, c. 376 x 210 cm, (incl. supporting linen: c. 435 x 284 cm), 18th century, asymmetrical knot, open to the left, heavily layered, H 21, V 27 = c. 567 kts/sqm, tile-like squares between six monumental guls, which seem to be inspired by brocade patterns of the Ming Dynasty; if carpets of this kind are already extremely rare, the present specimen is the only known piece with silk pile, borders with sea waves and zig-zag line as well as a closed meander pattern; the carpet comes from Austrian private ownership, is trimmed at the lower end and was originally even longer, heavily worn with a low and mostly bare pile condition; sewn by the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin on a linen support with eyelets stretched on a metal frame (available upon request).
