Tapestry,
Brussels (Netherlands), c. 406 x 344 cm, mid-17th century, Baroque pictorial carpet in the style of Rubens and his school. The borders are set apart from the actual scene by means of massive winding columns, richly moulded beams, cartouches, fruit garlands, figures and putti and thus create a spatial effect of the highest decorative impact. An unidentified subject with a monumental group of three warriors, in which a kneeling, illustrious lady, accompanied by two servants, receives a piece of jewellery from a leader. The fully preserved carpet is in a very good condition, without any appreciable damage. In the lower galloon, the Brussels city brand “B B” was re-inserted upside down during an earlier repair. Entirely backed with supporting linen.
