From 1958 onwards, Christo created a series of works that saw him give fabric or paper a relief-type surface by crumpling the upper layers, fixing them and ultimately coating them with varnish. He titled this series ‘Surface d’Empaquetage’. The coarsely worked, sometimes cracked surfaces and the sand particles in the varnish give the works of art a ‘shabby’ effect, thus anticipating the character of his early ‘packaging’.
