Ando Hiroshige

Ando Hiroshige - Starožitnosti

(Japan 1797-1858) Kôjimanchi-itchôme Sannô Matsuri nerikomi (The Sannô Procession at Kojimachi itchôme), series: "Meisho Edo hyakkei (Hundred Views of Edo), nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print), signature (lower right in red longitudinal cartouche): Hiroshige ga (drawn by Hiroshige), censor seal (upper right outer margin, round): aratame (approved) (here half cut), date seal (left of the censor seal, oval): Dragon 7 (1856) (here half cut), publisher’s seal (lower left): Shitaya Uo(ya) Ei(kichi). The series consists of 120 sheets, with the title page added at at a later date and a replaced scene. According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, this sheet was printed from the original woodblocks (the wood grain that is clearly discernible in the sky and water is in keeping with the original impressions). The colours of the present sheet are extremely close to the first impression. Two blue transversal clouds of the first print and bokashi at the upper edge of the green bank are missing. Good colours and impression. For a comparison with an early print, see: Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler: Hiroshie. Meisho Edo hyakkei, Cologne 2015, ill. 51, 35.4 x 23.3 (sheet size), full margins, attached to support, outside of the image area four tiny holes, mounted, (CT)
