Borgward presented the stunningly beautiful Isabella Coupé at the end of 1956. Production then started with a 75 hp engine in January 1957. Faced with the threat of a lawsuit by Borg Warner, the size of the rhombus was reduced in August 1958, as until then it had separated the ‘Borg’ from the ‘ward’, and the Americans were afraid of confusion. The controversial bankruptcy of Borgward brought production of the coupé to an abrupt end in September 1961 with the numbers standing at just under 10,000.

This Isabella Coupé can look back on an incredible life story otherwise heard only in fairy tales. It starts with the car leaving the factory in Bremen at a late stage of the company’s development when Borgward was already feeling the financial pinch and there was a significant overproduction of practically unsaleable vehicles. And so this Isabella was not delivered to the company Durament Estrich in Favoriten, the 10th District of Vienna, until 1963, two years after the bankruptcy. It remained there until the start of the 1970s, before moving to a brave new world with its fourth owner. It was discovered by the consignor just over two years ago in a scrap yard in the desert of Arizona. Opening the glove compartment, he discovered the original Austrian papers. This sealed his decision to bring the Isabella back home, which marked the start of almost two years of refurbishment with just one objective: to preserve its appearance, with all the scars and traces that 60 years in the life of an automobile and the desert sun of Arizona leave behind, while at the same time restoring the chassis, all mechanical parts and the interior. No sooner said than done. Now you could eat your dinner from the floor, the interior was obtained from a less fortunate Isabella, and everything about the mechanics, front and back, is new. And the rest, as you see, is pure fascination! Of course, many people would imagine a Borgward Coupé, the epitome of a beautiful vintage car, a little differently, but our Isabella has come home, alive and thrilling, to tell us her story.
