Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer
(Lille 1636–1699 London)
Flowers near a classical cornice on a terrace,
oil on canvas, 97 x 116 cm, framed
We are grateful to Fred Meijer who confirmed the attribution of the present painting.
Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer studied history painting in Antwerp and moved to Paris around 1650, where he collaborated with Charles Le Brun in the decoration of a number of royal palaces. Having been admitted to the Academy in 1665, he exhibited four still lifes of flowers at the Salon of 1673 and in no time established himself as a master in this genre. He developed a sumptuous Baroque style for which parallels can be found in contemporary Italian still life painting. His works were particularly praised for their realistic quality, although Monnoyer did not work from nature but conceived his paintings on the basis of drawings and studies. Louis XIV owned more than sixty drawings and an equal number of paintings by the artist’s hand. It is not exaggerated to say that he was the Sun King’s favourite flower painter and probably also the most important artist in this genre during the Grand Siècle.
