A Gradient Tiles Chair Prototype, designed and manufactured by Philipp Aduatz

in 2018, four-legged structure made of wood, tile material, fibreglass fabric, 10 000 glazed stoneware tiles, weight c. 90 kg. Height c. 80 cm, width c. 50 cm, depth c. 50 cm. (MHA)

Prototype from the limited edition of 4 examples + 2 épreuves d’artiste.

The Gradient Tiles Chair is an experimental chair designed by Philipp Aduatz and made exclusively from building materials. Aduatz first developed the idea for this object after completing the renovation of his studio, when he found himself with a lot of building materials left over. Since he did not want to throw them away, he decided to use them to create an experimental chair. The base frame is made of wood, coated with tile material, then completely covered with plaster and reinforced with a fibreglass fabric. The finishing touch consists in the application of 10 000 tiles, placed by hand to form a gradient pattern. For Aduatz, using materials originally intended for larger objects, adapting them to a smaller scale with varying precision requirements, was both a challenging and new experience.

Exhibited: Ventura Future, Future Dome Milan, 2018 Milan Design Week; Kunst des Sitzens, group exhibition, Tools Galerie Paris, 2019 With original certificate.
