Egbert van Heemskerck II

[Saleroom Notice]
Egbert van Heemskerck II - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Haarlem 1634/35–1704 London)
An Allegory of Vanity,
oil on canvas on panel, 36 x 44 cm, framed

Saleroom Notice:

Pieter Casteels III
(Antwerp 1684–1749 Richmond)

The present canvas is a typically witty and vibrant work from the hand of Egbert van Heemskerk, whose grasp of satirical narrative even attracted the ire of King Charles II of England. Van Heemskerck trained in Haarlem, where he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1649, the same year as Evert Collier, who like van Heemskerck also ended his career in London.

The present canvas is characteristic of van Heemskerck’s placement of ordinary people in fantastic or comical situations, a setting common to Netherlandish painting but entirely novel in England, earning van Heemskerck both renown and censure. Although dressed in the height of contemporary fashion, the female figure in the foreground who triumphally processes through the foreground beneath a gilded statue of Neptune is attended by a panoply of demonic creatures and Cerberus the three-headed hound of Hades. She is a personification of vanity as a cardinal sin, drawing on a rich pictorial tradition begun by Pieter Brueghel I in his popular engravings of the 1550s.
