Dutch artist active in Rome, 17th century
Scenes of Witchcraft,
oil on canvas, 100 x 84 cm, framed
The present composition is an intriguing testament to the group of Northern painters active in Rome in the 17th century, known as the Bentvueghels. It is related to the work of Domenicus van Wijnen, whose nickname among his bacchanalian brothers was Ascanius. Infamous for the pagan ceremonies they performed in the church of Santa Constanza, the current canvas appears to be summa of several different incantations, and may be by a close contemporary of the group.
