Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Shôheibashi Seidô Kandagawa sheet 46, (Shôhei Bridge, the Seidô Shrine and the Kanda River, title at upper right in rectangular cartouche), from the series:" Meisho Edo hyakkei" (100 Famous Views of Edo, red cartouche to the right of the title cartouche), nishiki-e (woodblock print), signed Hiroshige ga, publisher: Uoya Eikichi, dated 1857 (Ansei 4, month 9, see A. Marks, p. 482), aratame censor seal, possibly late print as Acc. No. 21.9462 MFA, Boston, cf. sheet KI 10964, MAK, Vienna. See also Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler, Hiroshige, pp. 282-284, Cologne 2011, balustrade and foliage with slightly wider lines, colours otherwise very good, wood grain in the area of the sky is well recognisable, almost full margins, aratame and date seal trimmed yet recognisable. Behind the Kandagawa River and the Shôheibashi Bridge, porters and passers-by can be seen walking past the wall of the Seidô ("Sacred Hall") on the opposite bank. It was built in 1690 as a shrine of Confucius worship by the fifth Tokugawa shogun Tsunayoshi (1648-1709) and is still intact today. The reproduction of the extremely thin rain lines crossing the sheet like a grid required all the skill of the woodcutter (hiroshi), adhesive strips at the upper corners on the reverse, 35.5 x 23.8 cm (overall dimensions), mounted, (CT)
