The Café de l’Europe (originally located at the corner of No. 8A Stephansplatz and No. 2 Jasomirgottstraße in Vienna’s 1st district) was built by Wilhelm Fränkel in 1874 and run by Ludwig Riedl. Open day and night, it welcomed members of the imperial household, military officers, and diplomats. After World War I the café moved to Jasomirgottstraße completely, a bank moving into its old premises. In April 1945, the café perished a fire and was rebuilt at a different place.
