The second view depicts one of the grandest and most important squares in Venice, the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo with the Scuola Grande di San Marco. The School was built by the Confraternity of San Marco in 1260. In 1485, a fire destroyed the original wooden structure, which was rebuilt in 1489. The Scuola Grande di San Marco was the richest guild in Venice for many years. In 1819, it became an Austrian military hospital. The Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo is the principal Dominican church in Venice. It was completed in 1430 and designed in brick in the Italian Gothic style. Twenty-five doges are buried in this church. Andrea del Verrocchio’s renowned equestrian statue of the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni, completed in 1496, is located on the right. The Rio dei Mendicanti is visible in the foreground. This view was painted on several occasions by Querena, and two of them were sold recently at Dorotheum.
