We are grateful to Guido Jansen for confirming the attribution after inspection of the original (private communication, 25 October 2020).

The present beautifully rendered scene is a characteristic example of refined, yet playfully eroticized, oeuvre of Jacob van Loo. That this work was once given to the master Gabriel Metsu (1629–1667) is testament to both to the subtleties of its meaning and the brilliance of its light and draperies. The narrative itself builds upon the Gardens of Love and Merry Companies genres already established in the paintings of the Low Countries. The iconography of the maiden with a low décolletage on the left clutching a sensuous basket of ripe and brilliantly handled fruit while the mischievous youth bisects her form by thrusting a flute, all rest within the same rich pictorial traditions.

Marked by the mid-17th century classicizing trend in Amsterdam drawn from the Roman Baroque, it would appear that the present work was executed some time before 1660, when van Loo was so renowned for his nudes and suggestive invention that he was at the time more sought after artist than even Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669). However, at the height of his popularity, van Loo stabbed a man to death in a dockside tavern brawl and was sentenced to hang. Fleeing to Paris, his work took on a less precocious tone, with the present canvas one of the few bright and decorous major works from his mature Amsterdam period that still remain in private hands.
