The present work can be compared to a painting in the Staatsgalerie, Stockholm (inv. no. 717), alternately attributed to Francesco Ubertini Verdi, called il Bachiacca or to Pier Francesco Foschi, both pupils of Andrea del Sarto. The formal language of the painting is close to the three Ubertini Verdi painter-brothers Bartolomeo (1484–1526/9), Francesco (1494–1557) and Antonio (1499–1572) and it is possible that it may have been created within the family studio by one of the sons of Francesco or Antonio.

The Madonna in the present painting is notably similar to the figure of Leda in the composition Leda and the Swan attributable to the workshop of Bachiacca, conserved in the Villa I Tatti, Florence (published in: R. G. La France, Workshop of Bachiacca: Leda and the Swan, in: C. B. Strehlke, M. Israëls [eds.], The Bernard and Mary Berenson Collection of European Paintings at I Tatti, Florence 2015, pp. 109-113) and both have almost identical headwear. The Madonna’s hair falling over her shoulder, recall those of the Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist by Francesco Ubertini in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond (inv. no. 2007.16) and the Bracci Holy Family by Andrea del Sarto of 1525 in the Galleria Palatina, Florence (inv. no. 62).
