daughter of the painter Anton Karlinsky (1872–1945)
studied at the School of Arts and Crafts from 1921 with Cizek and in the textile workshop with Rothansl. In 1922/23 she attended the ornament course and then went on to study in the department of ornamental form with Cizek and in the glass-painting workshop, she then did lead work with Klaus (until 1924/25) and a specialist class for painting with Löffler. In 1926 she won the Lobmeyr Prize for the kinetic glass windows she did with Klaus and went on her first trip to Paris. She was active as an artist from 1926/27. She collaborated with the Officina Vindobonensis of Robert Haas. In 1928 she taught at the Elizabeth Duncan School in Klessheim on behalf of Erika Giovanna Kliens and then from 1928–1930 taught at the Walden School in New York, during which time she created display designs for Macey's and Gimbel in New York. In 1930 she spent time in Holland and France (including Paris) and in 1931 she moved to Copenhagen and married the essayist, poet and painter Hans Scherfig, working as a freelance artist. ...
