The sculpture “Eternal Belief” by Damien Hirst belongs to a series that can be read as a symbol for the cycle of life. Each work has an individual title, such as “Eternal Sleep” or “Eternal Truth”. The particular iteration titled “Eternal Belief” presents as a crystal-clear crucifix studded with coloured crystal glass stones. The sculpture was made in an investment casting using the lost wax method - a traditional process in which both the model and the mould are ultimately destroyed.
Eternal life is a concept from Christian theology, related to the definition of eternal faith. It sees this relation and the belief in God as a basic prerequisite. Hirst counters this argument, convinced that art is the only thing that is truly eternal. Thus religion, medicine, and law and order are obsolete in view of eternity. In this work of art, Hirst attempts to capture the grace and symbolic power of eternal faith in a timeless way, placing its validity up for discussion.
