A Wall Clock: Dial of the Vienna Cube Clock ‘Normalzeit’, movement design by Emil Schauer

A Wall Clock: Dial of the Vienna Cube Clock ‘Normalzeit’, movement design by Emil Schauer - Design

1907 / 1948, plexiglass disc, metal hands, diameter c. 95 cm. (MHA)

No. 23 from the limited edition of 50 pieces with LED lighting and colour change. With original certificate. A piece of Viennese contemporary history - NORMALZEIT The ‘Normalzeit’ cube clock was installed in Vienna under Emperor Franz Josef in 1907. The first one was at the junction Opernring/Kärntnerstrasse. It was controlled by electrical impulses from a so-called mother clock in a nearby advertising pillar. On 1 May 1910, the starting signal was given for the introduction of CET - Normalzeit/standard time - in Austria and the clocks were set back by 5 minutes and 19 seconds. “The word Normalzeit, i.e. ‘standard time’, is a Viennese invention,” explains brand owner Christof Stein. Over the past 110 years, Viennese cube clocks have evolved from simple timepieces into orientation points, signposts, street furniture and, finally, into design objects (furniture with a history). The Normalzeit dial from 1948 has the original motor, a built-in clock and plexiglass (c. 1948 - originally it was milk glass in around 1907). It demonstrates - especially in times like these - how images of time and concepts of time can change. A piece of contemporary history on the wall.
