Scenes from the Greek mythology is the dominent theme of the figure ornamentation of the Vienna Hofburg. Eight groups with Hercules by artists of the younger „Ringstraßen“ generation are located on the so called Michaelertrakt. The sketches of Graner show motifs from he Hercules myth, at the left and right side of Michaelertor (St. Michael’s gate):
Johann Scherpe (1855-1929): Herkules procures the belt of Hippolyte, the queen of Amazons (9th labour),
Josef Lax (1851-1909): Hercules freeing Prometheus from being chained
Anton Paul Wagner (1834-1895): Hercules kidnapping the Underworld beast Cerberus (12th labour)
